who owns the space?

The Outer Space Treaty says that no nation can “own” space, the Moon or any other body and celestial bodies can only be used for peaceful purposes. Although there is no ownership, the space is occupied. Astronomers face the problem of satellites – a growing number of private ones – obscuring their observations. An open call for scientific experiments to be carried out on the moon has been placed by the American Defense Department. Private companies started recruiting people for long stays on Mars. What does all of this mean? How does it impact us? Can science be used as a tool for colonialism as in the past?

We propose a workshop to discuss these questions and present some recent articles on the topic. Brainstorming together ideas and possible futures, we invite the participants to create zines about the topic. This workshop was part of the Gängeviertel 15th Birthday event (August 25/2024).

Workshop in collaboration with the astrophysicist Dr. Maria Elidaiana da Silva Pereira.
